Biography
Saturnino Javier a native of the Philippines, resided in Ilocos Sur Tagudin], and was a fisherman by trade. He owned a small fishing boat and set out daily with one or more of his sons to make a catch to be sold in the local markets.
Saturnino Javier was also a businessman in a time and place (Tagudin, Philippines) where success or failure was gauged by one’s ability to enforce strength of will.
Tagudin was divided into many Barrios, each competing for control of territory and commercial rights. This often led to conflict in which rival gangs would battle, using the Traditional Eskrima fighting systems involving the use of sticks, knives, spear, rock-throwing, slingshot and empty hand. Each family had its family Eskrima art, passed from father to son, generation to generation.
Manong Javier was taught the Javier Family Eskrima Method by his father and passed his knowledge down to his son, Isidro P. Javier.
Families in the Philippines were large by tradition, and Saturnino Javier and his wife, Benilda maintained a large house with nine family members, including sons Manuel, Anselmo and daughters Angela, Tomassa, Catalina, and Magdalena. One son (Anselmo Javier) was killed while serving in the U.S. Army in WWII, and Angela was executed by Japanese soldiers during the occupation of the Philippines in the war.
