Steve Sanders aka Steve Muhammad (1944) Is an American martial artist, instructor and one of the four founding members of the Black Karate Federation.

Personal Life
Born Steve Sanders in Topeka, Kansas, 1944. Mr. Sanders has since changed his name as an adult to Steve Muhammad. As a youth he participated in school athletics, excelling in Baseball, Football, and Track. He received a Football Scholarship and attended Kansas State University.

Mr. Muhammad joined the United States Marines, serving as a member of the Pathfinders, an airborne paratrooper unit which operates as a small team, dropping into enemy territory to scout and prepare landing zones for large-scale paratroop and helicopter landings. He served a tour of duty in Okinawa, where he trained in Goju-Ryu one of the “hard/soft” styles of Okinawan Karate, employing both hard and soft fighting techniques.

After completion of his tour he was stationed at Camp Pendleton, Southern California. During this time he enrolled in Edmund Parker’s West Los Angeles school, earning the rank of Purple Belt before he was sent to Vietnam. When he returned from Vietnam at the completion of his military service, Mr. Muhammad resumed his training in Kenpo , and earned his first black belt under two of Edmund Parker’s black belt instructors, Dan Inosanto and Chuck Sullivan.

Mr. Muhammad began competing in Martial Arts tournaments, winning his first title in 1965 at Azusa Pacific University in southern California. He became a member of the West Coast Karate Team. He went on to win a number of tournaments:
International Lightweight Champion, eight titles, California State Champion, four titles, World Professional Champion, three titles, and state titles New York, Chicago, and Salt Lake City.

During his competition years Steve Muhammad earned the reputation for having “the fastest hands in karate".

Towards the end of the 1960’s Steve Muhammad joined with other black martial artists often from different disciplines, training together at places like the West L.A. Karate Institute, Teen Post, Manchester Part, and Manual Arts High School. Many of these martial artists would also meet at Van Ness Park, and this became the foundation to what later developed into the Black Karate Federation. They called themselves The "Magnificent Seven"; Steve Muhammad, Donnie Williams, Curtis Pulliam, Cliff Stewart, Jerry Smith, Ron Chapel, and Karl Armelin.<br>Steve Muhammad became the unifying factor, helping to bring all these martial artists together. In 1969, this core group formed the Black Karate Federation (BKF) and elected Mr. Muhammad as its first President.

Biography
Saturnino Javier a native of the Philippines, resided in Ilocos Sur Tagudin], and was a fisherman by trade. He owned a small fishing boat and set out daily with one or more of his sons to make a catch to be sold in the local markets.

Saturnino Javier was also a businessman in a time and place (Tagudin, Philippines) where success or failure was gauged by one’s ability to enforce strength of will.

Tagudin was divided into many Barrios, each competing for control of territory and commercial rights. This often led to conflict in which rival gangs would battle, using the Traditional Eskrima fighting systems involving the use of sticks, knives, spear, rock-throwing, slingshot and empty hand. Each family had its family Eskrima art, passed from father to son, generation to generation.

Manong Javier was taught the Javier Family Eskrima Method by his father and passed his knowledge down to his son, Isidro P. Javier.

Families in the Philippines were large by tradition, and Saturnino Javier and his wife, Benilda maintained a large house with nine family members, including sons Manuel, Anselmo and daughters Angela, Tomassa, Catalina, and Magdalena. One son (Anselmo Javier) was killed while serving in the U.S. Army in WWII, and Angela was executed by Japanese soldiers during the occupation of the Philippines in the war.

Biography
By, Glen Rathbone

Leovigildo "Leo" Miguel Giron, the son of Policarpo and Ellen Giron was born August 20, 1911 in the barrio of Bayambang, town of Hermosa, Province of Pangasinan, Philippines. The Filipino Martial Art named Escrima/Arnis (Fencing) by the Spanish was an ancient fighting tradition passed through many generations from father to son, each family maintaining its own closely guarded style, to be shared with no one except immediate family members and clans.<br><br>

Life in the Barrio could be rough for a young boy such as Leo Giron, and in the tradition of the family art, Leo’s first training began with family members. In 1920, As a result of bullying from other boys, Leo’s father had him begin training with an Escrima master, Master Benito Junio, who was also from the little barrio of Inerangan Province of the Bayambang and was known for his expertise in Estilo Larga Mano, (long hand weapon fighting, also known as Cabaroan or New Style) and Estilo De Fondo, or Fondo Fuerte (in a solid fighting position).<br><br>

Larga (Largo) Mano, also known as the “quick kill” or “killer style”, is primarily a bladed system of self defense which uses what are known today as the Cinco Teros striking patterns. A weapon of 30 inches or more is preferred for training. This method of defense employs the use of a single movement based on a concept of defending and counter-striking, creating a block and counter in one technique. This is designed for efficiency of movement and a direct line of attack. The Cinco Tero striking patterns implement the complete range of striking patterns commonly found in most 12 angle striking systems.
Leo Giron’s training with master Junio lasted for approximately 1 year and then, his next instructor was Master Bundoc, Leo Giron's cousin and a graduate of Master Junio's. Master Bundoc also taught Leo Giron the Cabaroan style as well as the Cadaanan (Old) style. This training lasted for about 5 to 6 years, then continued with Master Benito’s uncle Fructuso Junio, who was known for his expertise in Estilo Macabebe, which uses the double sticks.<br><br>

Macabebe is the name of a town in the province of Pampanga, Philippines. Men in this area sell clothing materials to families in the remote barrios, and some of these men from Macabebe introduced an art of self-defense involving the use of two long sticks; a style characterized by the interweaving motions of the sticks, also known as Sinawali the (Weaving Style). The Macabebe men were so renowned as fighting warriors they were employed by others for protection. The Macabebe fighters also employed a bare hand and disarming system that is used in the modern Giron Arnis / Escrima, and with Estilo Macabebe, the weapon of choice is two Bolo Knives. Master Fructuso Junio instilled in Leo Giron the importance of defining the difference between the Cadaanan (Old Style) and Cabaroan (New Style) and continued his instruction until Leo left the Philippines in 1926, bound for America.<br><br>

With only 25 cents to his name, Leo Giron arrived in Stockton California, which had the largest Filipino population in the state. He was able to find work in the fields of Terminous California, picking celery, but because of his young age, he was paid for half a man’s wage. The hourly rate was 35 cents, but young Leo was paid only 17.5 cents per hour. ==Biography==

It was a struggle to make a living and Leo moved from field to field with the other workers, eventually arriving in Meridian, California in 1929, where he began work on farms picking prunes. Kenpo Karate Is a system of martial arts in America created by Ed Parker. Often you may see the word Karate used following Kenpo. Although Karate is an art all its own, it has no ties to Kenpo. Several martial arts instructors have placed them together for business reasons. The word Karate has become a generic term for all martial arts. For the layperson it would be incorrect to think these two highly awesome arts could harmonize together and function as one. Karate Concepts, Principles and Ideas of movement are the complete opposites of Kenpo.

Kempo – Is the Japanese pronunciation of Ch’uan-Fa (Fist Law). Some people say that when Kenpo is spelled with the “N”, it indicates that the origin is Chinese, and when Kempo is spelled with an “M” it indicates an association with the Okinawan culture; (an example would be, Shorin-ji Kempo, or Ryukyu Kempo). This is not completely correct, and although it is true that the Kempo systems of Okinawa use the “M”, it was the Mitose family who established the spelling of Kenpo with a”N”; and their roots were Japanese. Kenpo, though brought from China as were all those other styles, went through the greatest development or changes during its life in Japan according to a book by James Mitose. This book was written in 1953, and was the first book ever published on the art. It was entitled "Kenpo Jujitsu", and Kenpo was spelled with an “N”. Both Mitose’s Kenpo and the Kenpo that went to Okinawa find their origins in China, so it is the opinion of this writer that quite possibly, Kenpo with the quote “N” is just part of the unique system of the Mitose clan.

James Masayoshi Mitose, (December 30, 1916 - March 26, 1981) was a Japanese American Martial Artist who introduced the art of Kosho Ryu Kenpo into the Territory of Hawaii in the late 1930s. Grand Master James M. Mitose was born in Hawaii, and at the age of four, he was sent to Japan to study the family art of Kosho Ryu Kenpo. Upon completing 15 years of training Mitose returned to Hawaii. There he opened the first Official Self-Defense Club of Hawaii, and decided to share his family art with people of all races, and began teaching Kosho Ryu Kenpo. After 15 years of teaching the art of Kosho Ryu Kenpo, Mitose awarded the rank of first degree black belt to only six of his dedicated students. These were: William KS Chow, Jiro Nakamura, Thomas Young, Paul Yamaguchi, Arthur Keawe, and Edward Lowe. Just before his untimely death in 1981, James M. Mitose passed the family art of Kosho Ryu Kenpo onto his son, Thomas B. Mitose.
Biography
By Glen Rathbone<br><br>
Isidro P. Javier began his life’s journey in Tagudin, the Philippines, May 10, 1912.

Life in the “Barrios” or Barangays of the city found families and clans bundled together in closely guarded camps, each with their own dialects, rules, and protection. Competition often turned to violence as each Barrio jealously guarded its territory. Isidro Javier learned to be his own master in the toughest school of all; real life and death combat in the streets, grooming him as a leader and preparing him for the challenges he would face.

Isidro’s father was a fisherman and maker of nets, done by hand, a craft that was handed down generation after generation. And so was the ancient and secretive art of Eskrima and the Bolo Knife, known in the western world as Filipino Stick and Knife Fighting. Fathers taught their sons how to make weapons from the simplest of tools, and as a boy, young Isidro practiced his family art in the streets with his friends and ultimately, against his enemies.

In an interview recently, Mr. Javier described himself as a “troublemaker”, and recounted how he was the leader of his gang of six boys. The gangs clustered in small groups for protection and the constant give and take of power and territory. The boys practiced Eskrima and the Bolo Knife every day, perfecting their techniques, mastering new moves, always in the quest to top the competition.

There were no Dojos, no nicely padded mats, helmets or body protection. They simply whacked each other black and blue with the sticks, which easily raised lumps and bruises, but Isidro Javier decided the knife was his weapon of choice.

They would wrap their wrists with shirts or cloth and slice at each other in whirling, flashing moves. The result often meant cuts and slashes on the wrists and arms, but then, “the girls come and dress the wounds” Sometimes there was no time to wrap the wrists,” meaning if a fight broke out with another gang; they would go at it with no protection at all. Mr. Javier bears the numerous scars on his wrists from real street combat.<br/><br>

To be a gang leader, one had to show absolute fearlessness, total confidence and be the best with stick and knife. Isidro Javier was all of that. “Fight because of girls. When I say I want that girl no touch that girl. No good to fight if no encouragement (from the girls)." But the fighting became so dangerous that the local Priest intervened and forced the boys to swear not to fight. Mr. Javier smiles and doesn’t reveal whether the fighting really stopped.

For many boys of Tagudin, the only life was what they made in the streets, but for Isidro Javier this would never be enough. His keen mind and restless spirit could not be confined to the world he was born into. When he was only thirteen years old he borrowed a friend’s driver’s license, lied about his age, and bought the Cidual Tax required for anyone who wanted to leave the Philippines. He sailed to the big island of Hawaii and went to work on the sugar plantations, then to the other islands to harvest Pineapple. But opportunity soon knocked when his older brother Manuel Javier bought his plane ticket and brought him to Pismo Beach, California.

Isidro was the only one in the family who went to high school, and Manuel needed a bookkeeper to run his sugar pea farm. But war came to America and to Isidro’s homeland when the Japanese launched their master plan of Busido (Divine Right), and soon, the Draft landed him in the US Navy on an aircraft carrier in 1943.

Isidro was one of only four men assigned to fuel the aircraft on ship, and during combat he manned a machine gun as Japanese torpedo and Kamikaze planes attacked. His ship, USS Nehenta-Bay (CVE-74) sailed and battled in the South Pacific, but survived un-damaged through several campaigns. Isidro Javier earned his medals and his U.S. Citizenship, and returned as a hero.<br/><br/>* Victory Medal WWII - Silver Star<br/>* Asia-Pacific Campaign Award - Silver Star<br/>* Philippine Liberation Award – Star<br/><br/>

However, Isidro Javier’s inner drive would not allow him to remain under his brother’s wings for long. Over the years he became a driving force that helped shape the Filipino community. He farmed, fished, and raised and trained prized roosters, which was a popular pass-time of the community.

On July 23, 1946 he earned the all-time record fish catch in Pismo Beach when he landed twenty-three thousand pounds of fish in one day.

He bought farmland all around the Central Coast of California and his status as a leader in the Filipino Community grew.

In the 1960’s the Farm Labor Movement brought Caesar Chavez to “Manong” (Godfather) Isidro Javier’s home, which became headquarters for the farm laborers as they fought for better pay and work conditions. Manong Javier worked side-by-side with Caesar Chavez as his main organizer. "I told them (workers) what to do, and they did it. I made things happen".

Numerous awards including his advancement to 33rd Degree Grand Master in the Masons, mark Isidro Javier’s many accomplishments.

His long journey of 98 years can be traced through a life of proper nutrition and diet. Mr. Javier was a master cook with some highly sought after secret recipes, but only he knew the ingredients.

Great Grand Master Isidro P. Javier passed away on August 18, 2010, having lived a truly remarkable life filled with challenges, starting in the streets of Tagudin as an Eskrima master fighter, to his many accomplishments as WWII hero, businessman, fisherman, landowner, and leader of his community.

The Javier Method is a secretive and traditional family fighting art, based on the Filipino Martial Art System called Eskrima, and passed from father to son, generation to generation.

Isidro P. Javier began his training at the age of six, (1918) in Tagudin, Philippines and was taught by his father Saturnino Javier. By the age of twelve, young Javier was running his own gang in the Barrio of Ilocos Sur.

Javier's "Boys" and fellow gang members learned from their fathers' family traditions, and shared their knowledge with each other in different training methods, giving Isidro Javier an advantage over his adversaries in battle. As the result of many street battles with rival gangs, and through his later years of experiences, Isidro Javier has developed his own Multi-Style of Fighting that has been tested time and time again.

Manong Javier's only student is his son-in-law Frank Landers, who is Grand Master and founder of Seishindo Kenpo. On June 3rd 2010, GGM Javier named Grand Master Frank Landers as his successor and Senior Grand Master of the Javier's Family Fighting Art.

On July 17, 2010, Great Grand Master Javier adopted the Bahala Na Multi-Style as his family, and promoted Dexter Labonog to Grand Master of the Eskrima Art, sanctioned and endorsed by the Filipino Martial Arts Multi-Style Origination. Executive Committee: Great Grand Master Isidro P. Javier, Senior Grand Master Frank Landers, and Professor Catherine Landers.

As GGM Isidro P. Javier approached his 100th birthday, he recognizes that the world had changed from his early days of survival on the dangers streets Tagudin. He sees that there is no longer the need for secrecy in protecting his family fighting art treasures. He now wishes to preserve the family legacy by sharing his experiences and his family fighting art with the new generation of Eskrimador's now promoting Filipino Martial art's in America.

From the notes of Frank Landers' autobiography:

I first met Isidro P. Javier in 1984. It was not until the 1990's that Mr. Javier revealed to me that he had learned the art of Eskrima (Blade Fighting Art), and his favorite, the "Bolo Knife", or skill of Knife fighting. Mr. Javier told me that as a young man he had learned how to protect himself with a knife through family traditions handed down from father to son. He told me that teaching others was a risk; "You never know when your friend will become your enemy".

This truly is old school thought handed down in a time when life was brutal and survival depended on your own personal treasurers in your pocket, and the skill to out-think your opponent. Mr. Javier believed that the art of "Eskrima" (Blade/Knife Fighting) was a good learning tool in his early foundation of training, but he felt the knife was more practical to carry, and therefore the Bolo Knife became the weapon of choice and much more useful for survival.

Mr. Javier spoke about those early days of knife training with other local boys in the village. He recalled how they would wrap their wrists with some kind of shirt or thick cloth so the knife blade would not cut them as they wheeled and struck the wrist targets. When asked, did it work? Mr. Javier replied with a smile, "Not always, got a few cuts".
